UK Inheritance Tax Changes

From April 2012 in the UK, there will be a reduced rate of inheritance tax (IHT) of 36% for estates leaving 10% or more to charity. IHT in the UK is levied after someone's death on money, property and possessions worth more than the threshold of £325,000. A taxable estate of £1m attracts death duties of 40% on any assets above the threshold, but the budget proposals reduce that to 36% for anyone pledging to hand over more than 10% of their estate's value. George Osborne told the Commons: “Let's be clear: no beneficiaries will be better off, just the charities. I want to make giving 10% of your legacy to charity the new norm in our country." 2010 resarch by The Community Foundation suggest legacy giving here is a lot lower. Could this initiative work in Ireland? Let us know as it would help our case with governement. See also the research at http://bit.ly/mRxWJQ.

Women's Fund Update

Picture

The second round of grants for The Women's Fund recently closed. 87 grant applications were received, again highlighting the increased requirements for funding among groups supporting vulnerable women in Ireland. It is probable that only around 10-12 projects will be supported. More information about The Women's Fund is at http://bit.ly/e0PHBF
Over 150 people attended the recent Women in Philanthropy event. The event focused on raising women’s awareness of philanthropy and specific issues facing women in Ireland today. Further events are currently being planned.
